O SIDA, outra vez / AIDS again

According to a recent study, made public by Reuters, nearly one in five gay and bisexual men in 21 major U.S. cities are infected with HIV, and nearly half of them do not know it.

But something seems not to be in place: the study data is not fully published and for what is presented it makes us think about its legitimacy. The number of elements studied were very few (only 8,153 for 21 big cities) and the way the data is presented may look as «politically incorrect», or as serving too well some political views.

The study was made based on the elements' «race» and it goes as far as to use the expression «young black man»; it states that this «young black men» have a higher change of being HIV positive and (also) of not knowing about their health condition (while this seems more to be a case of lesser economic conditions and access to health services than of a question of skin colour...); the expressions used are highly hyperbolic: «alarming situation», «the severity of the impact of HIV in the gay community »,... ; and last, the study does not call for a change within the community but for a stronger governmental action.

Nevertheless, it is still very important to call the attention to all - regarding of one's sexual orientation (or skin colour)- for the seriousness of the disease and the importance of safe sex. So, go out and have lots of fun but be sure wear your condom!
